Tierfilm von Jean-Jacques Annaud über zwei Bären in der Wildnis Kanadas. British Columbia, Kanada im Jahr 1885. Ein Bärenjunges verliert auf tragische Weise seine Mutter, die bei der Beschaffung von Honigwaben einen Felsen hinunterstürzt. Alleine macht sich das kleine Tier auf die Suche nach Nahrung und versucht sich alleine durch die unbarmherzige Natur zu kämpfen. Dabei kreuzt sein Pfad den eines ausgewachsenen Bären, der von zwei Jägern (Tchéky Karyo und Jack Wallace) angeschossen wurde. Nachdem der erwachsene Bär seine Feindseligkeit gegenüber dem anderen Bären überwunden hat, ziehen sie zu zweit durch die Wälder Kanadas. Dabei bringt der erfahrene Bär dem Jungen alle Grundtechniken des Bärenseins bei. Doch die Jäger holen sie bald ein und es beginnt ein Kampf um Leben und Tod.
